High Society

Heiress Tracy Lord is about to marry the sensible, dull George Kitteridge. Meanwhile, her ex-husband, Dexter Haven, is determined to win Tracy back before her wedding day. Tracy, on the other hand, finds herself wrapped up in affair with journalist Mike Connor. With three suitors desperate for her love, who will win Tracy’s heart?

Maria Friedman’s High Society started with a flurry of colour, music and laughter. This bubbly atmosphere was maintained throughout the entire performance, with the entire cast dancing to the iconic songs ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’ and ‘Well, Did You Evah’.

However, there were also more serene, beautifully crafted moments in the play, such as the ‘True Love’ scene, and the well known song ‘You’re Sensational’. Both of these scenes took place by the pool, which was portrayed by a projection of rippling water. I found the splashes it made very therapuetic.

My favourite scene was undoubtedly the ball! Women were thrown into the air and their lace skirts formed a pink, purple, green and blue froth around them. In addition to this, a piano rises up out of the stage for Tracy to dance on!

The piano is not the only incredible piece of set. A table that lays itself, a real barbecue and a moving model of a boat all help bring this classic story to life.

The Old Vic has outdone itself.
