Jane Eyre

A woman. A man. A secret

Young Jane Eyre has been brought up to believe that she is poor, plain and worthless. When she becomes the governess at Thornfield Hall, she expects her life to be one of poverty and simplicity. But soon, Jane finds herself falling in love with her wealthy, dark master: Mr Rochester. For a while, she is content. But Mr Rochester has a secret. A terrible secret. A secret that will change Jane’s life.

The setting for this Chapterhouse production of Jane Eyre was breathtaking. The backdrop of Hampton Court, Worcestershire, made me feel like I was looking at the picturesque turrets of Thornfield.

However, I felt that the casting for this production could have been better. For a start, I found that Aaron Charles’s Mr Rochester was not fierce or brooding enough. In addition to this Eliza Jade (Jane) was plainer than I imagine Jane to be (because, although Jane is taught that she is not pretty, Mr Rochester and Diana Rivers both refer to her as beautiful.) On the other hand, Louise Mellor (Adéle, Miss Ingram, Bertha and Rosamund Oliver) was very good. Although she was given the difficult task of acting a child, she portrayed the part of Adéle well. Her snobbish Miss Ingram made the audience roar with laughter and her Bertha managed to spook everyone…

On the whole, I felt that this play could have been better, but I enjoyed my evening.
